JET was established in 1963 as a METI-designated inspection institution. Since then, JET has performed type tests on numerous electrical appliances.

Today, JET offers safety and confidence to manufacturers, distributors, and consumers as an impartial third party institution that assesses the conformity of certain types of appliances based on the Electrical Appliance and Material Safety Law and performs certifications in accordance with international standards such as ISO/IEC Guide 65, ISO/IEC 17025 and 17020.

History

1963 February Japan Electrical Testing Laboratories of Japan Electric Association established.
  April Designated as testing institution under the Electrical Appliance and Material Control Law.
  May Type testing operations begin.
   
1964   June Testing by request begins.
  October Kansai Branch (currently the Kansai Laboratory) established.
  November Nagoya Branch (currently the Nagoya Office) established.
   
1965   April Name changed to Japan Electrical Testing Laboratories (JET).
  August Factory inspection operations begin upon request from VDE.
   
1973   June Safety breaker label service begins.
   
1980   August Earth leakage circuit breaker label service begins.
  December Bilateral Agreement on electrical appliance testing signed with the Canadian Standards Association (CSA).
   
1981   April JET certified as accredited inspection body under the Industrial Standardization Law.
   
1982   September Bilateral Agreement on electrical appliance testing signed with Underwriters Laboratories Inc.
   
1986   March Factory inspection operations begin upon request from IMQ.
  September Bilateral Agreement on electrical appliance testing signed with ETL.
   
1987   September Yokohama Laboratory established.
  November Factory inspection operations begin upon request from ETL.
   
1988   May Bilateral Agreement on electrical appliance testing signed with KAITECH.
   
1990   April Electrical Appliance Safety Center established (name changed to Electrical Products Safety Center in January 1994).
  August Components and Materials Voluntary Registration System begins.
   
1991   April JET designated as specified inspection body under the Electrical Appliance and Material Control Law
  June Bilateral Agreement on electrical appliance testing signed with BCIQ.
   
1992   January Factory inspection operations begin upon request from KEMA.
  May Bilateral Agreement on electrical appliance testing signed with Underwriters Laboratories Inc.
   
1993   March Quality system assessment and registration begin.
   
1994   December Third party certification for electrical products (JET certification activities) begins.
   
1995   November Research Division's Nagoya Research Center established.
   
1996   April Environmental management system assessment and registration begin.
   
1997   September Name changed to Japan Electrical Safety & Environment Technology Laboratories.
  October Third party certification for water-supply utensils begins.
   
1998   March JET designated as inspection body (domestic) under the Industrial Standardization Law.
  April JET designated as inspection body (overseas) under the Industrial Standardization Law.
  September JET designated as accredited testing body under the Industrial Standardization Law.
   
1999   March JET designated as a national certification body (NCB) under the IECEE-CB scheme.
  August Jet components certification and registration service begins.
   
2001   April JET designated as accredited inspection body under the Electrical Appliance and Material Safety Law.
Conformity assessment under the Electrical Appliance and Material Safety Law begins.
Household breaker certification begins.
   
2002   May Comprehensive Agreement with the Certification and Accreditation Administration of the People's Republic of China of China (CNCA) signed.
  November Testing and factory inspection consignment Agreement signed with the China Quality Certification Center (CQC).
   
2003   August Accredited by the government of Japan as a designated inspection body based on the Consumer Products Safety Law.
   
2004   February Designated by the government of Japan as a specified inspection body based on the Industrial Standardization Law.
   
2005   April Accredited by the government of Japan as a Third Party Certification body under The Pharmaceutical Affairs Law.
   
2006   March Designated by the government of Japan as a Registered Certification body(under the new JIS Mark Scheme) based on the Industrial Standardization Law.
  June JET’s laboratories at TOKYO,YOKOHAMA,KANSAI have been designated as Accredited Testing Laboratories under JNLA(Japan National Laboratory Accreditation System), with MRA(Mutual Recognition Arrangement), by NITE(National Institute of Technology and Evaluation) based on the Industrial Standardization Law.
