When exporting electrical products to Japan, you must comply with the Japanese regulations. JET takes special care to explain the legal procedures in an accessible format. First, follow the legal procedures described in the format. If any of the items in (6), (7), (8), or (9) apply to your product, please contact JET. (Both (6) and (9) are subject to legal obligations, so if they apply to your product , you must perform them.) An explanation of the overall procedural flow is set forth below.

The flow chart of a "Summary of Exporting Electrical Products to Japan" is here.

(1) Instances where the product to be exported to Japan is not a component subject to the Electrical Appliance and Material Safety Law (hereinafter referred to as the Law). In the case of a product ( such as a capacitor, electromagnetic relay, miniature fuse (less than 1A), or compressor ), proceed to item ( 7 ). In the case of a component that is subject to the Law (such as cords, plugs, miniature fuses (1A or more), transformers, and induction motors), proceed to item ( 2 ).

(2) Instances where the product to be exported to Japan is not subject to the Law if the product is not subject to the law, proceed to item ( 8 ). In the case of a product subject to the law (such AC adaptor, air conditioner, or washing machine, etc.) or a component subject to the law (such as cord, plug, miniature fuse (1A or more), transformer, or induction motor), proceed to item ( 3 ).

(3) Products subject to the Law are divided into two categories i.e. Specified Electrical Appliance electrical products and NON-specified Electrical Appliance electrical products. Specified Electrical Appliance electrical products are composed of 112 product types such as electric cables and cords, miniature fuse, wiring device, AC adaptor, and electrical toilet, and NON-specified Electrical Appliance electrical products are composed of 340 product types such as refrigerator, washing machine, and air conditioner. In the case of Specified Electrical Appliance, proceed to item ( 6 ). In the case of NON-specified Electrical Appliance, proceed to item ( 4 ).

(4) The Law imposes technical requirements compliance obligations and inspection obligations. If you are able to perform them on your own, proceed to item ( 6 ). Otherwise, proceed to item ( 8 ).

(5) Products that are subject to the Water Works Law (pumps, valves, water heaters, water heating toilets and so on that are connected to the water supply system) must comply with the Water Works Law. If your product applies to the Water Works Law, proceed to item ( 9 ). Otherwise, proceed to item ( 10 ).

(6) For Specified Electrical Appliance electrical products, you must apply for conformity assessment by JET and receive a conformity certificate. The Japanese importer must retain a copy of the certificate. Please note a violation of the Law occurs if the importer does not retain a copy of the certificate.

Please refer to "I Conformity Testing of Specified Products by JET as a designated testing institution under the Electrical Appliance and Material Safety Law".

(7) Components and materials to be integrated in products are repeatedly tested by JET. By registering such components and materials under the product testing requirements, repeated testing becomes unnecessary.
Accordingly, assembling manufacturers can save testing time and costs, and component manufacturers are able to distinguish their products from unregistered components and enhance their appeal to assembling manufacturers. Thus, the JET marks are utilized for assembling manufacturers as well as components manufacturers.

Please refer to "II Operations as a third party institution for certification" and "(2) Registration and Certification of Components and Materials."

(8) There is no legal regulation for electrical products not subject to the Law, so obtaining the JET certification mark before putting products into the market will serve to distinguish your products from the products not bearing the JET certification mark and provide marketing benefits. NON-specified Electrical Appliance electrical products can also be tested for compliance with the Law through obtaining JET certification mark.

Please refer to "II Operations as a third party institution for certification" and "(1) S-JET certification of Electrical Products."

(9) Water-supply utensils that are directly connected to the domestic water supply system are subject to the Water Works Law and are not allowed to be sold in Japan without water-supply utensils certification. If electrical product conformity testing and JET certification are performed at the same time, certification can be obtained simultaneously, by saving time and costs.

Please refer to "II Operations as a third party institution for certification" and "(3) Certification of Water-supply Utensils Equipment."

(10) If your product is applicable to one of ( 6 ) through ( 9 ), the indicated procedure must be followed.
